🎾 Game, Set, Match: Learning How You Learn
Two weeks ago, my husband and I accompanied a couple of friends to New York City to attend the US Open. I love sports, but I’ve always struggled to understand the scoring in tennis. It’s been explained to me many times, and while I understand in the moment, it never sticks.
However, my time spent at the US Open was eye-opening.
Even more incredible than the vibe of the event was that I finally understood the game (and how to keep score!).
As I returned home and reflected on why it finally clicked for me, I realized that I learn best when I see and experience.
So, all those times I “heard” the scoring explained to me, it didn’t resonate because I’m not an auditory learner. I need to see and participate in order for things to really sink in.
According to research, there are three types of learners:
- Auditory learners who learn by listening and hearing
- Visual learners who learn by reading or seeing pictures
- Tactical learners who learn by touching and doing
So, what kind of learner are you?
Think about the last time you had to learn something new.
- Did you listen to a podcast or video?
- Did you read the instruction manual or an article?
- Did you need to play around with it? Or talk to a patient about their new medication for the information to “stick”?
Knowing how you learn is a superpower.
Just think about how much time and energy you could save if you knew how you optimally learn? I’d love to hear about it!
As always, have a great week and keep learning (the way you learn best)!
