In my lifetime, I don’t remember a more game-changing medication than the advent of GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide 1) agonists.
The buzz about GLP-1s is everywhere.
I’m sure you know people who’ve had success, failure, side effects, and no side effects.
Who have insurance coverage and no insurance coverage.
Who have a prescription from their primary care provider, telemedicine prescriber, or a med spa.
There is even an Oprah special documentary, “Shame, Blame, and the Weight Loss Revolution”, which I recently watched. Many of the guests called the drug class “life-changing”, and as healthcare providers we see that play out for patients.
While the medication aspect wasn’t new, the documentary gave me a different perspective on obesity as a disease, and the impact of these medications for people who’ve tried most everything else. To gain that perspective, I encourage taking 45-minutes to watch it.
I also had the chance to talk about GLP-1s with folks from the Alliance for Pharmacy Compounding on this week’s GameChangers podcast. We discussed compounded GLP-1s and how pharmacists can proactively support prescribers in understanding the compounding landscape.
Prescribers need our knowledge, so use this topic to build trust and connection as the medication therapy expert!
As always, have a great week and keep learning!
