Last week, Kathy and I attended the National Community Pharmacy Association (NCPA) in Orlando. The meeting was palpable for so many reasons:
- Sobering to hear what community pharmacy owners are facing with the DIR cliff about to hit in a couple of short months
- Exciting to witness forward-thinking pharmacists providing services to improve the health of their communities, such as hearing aids, nutrients, health equity services, CBD products, and so much more
- Anxious that we arenβt doing enough, fast enough, to save rural areas from having pharmacy β and healthcare – deserts
- Bucket-filling to talk with colleagues across the country who have become friends over the years
It seems to be what weβre living these days β equally celebrating the good we do for our patients AND fighting for the ability to keep doing it. These issues β examples being unfair PBM practices and unreasonable workplace conditions β impact all areas of pharmacy practice, whether directly or indirectly.
Iβm not a vocal advocator by nature, but if we are to ensure our continued role on the health care team, each of us has a responsibility to connect the dots for patients, legislators, insurance companies, business owners (and anyone who will listen!) about what healthcare would look like without pharmacy.
There are some great resources you can lean on from NCPA. Check them out
Letβs keep pushing forward, friends – for our patients, and for pharmacy!
As always, have a great week and keep learning!
