Patient Rights and Responsibilities 2024

Patient Rights and Responsibilities 2024

This course provides an overview of patient rights and correlative patient responsibilities, within the context of contemporary pharmacy practice. The foundational meaning of “rights” and “responsibilities,” and their reciprocal relationship is discussed. The legal case study method is utilized to provide a realistic description of how courts of law have resolved controversies related to the rights and responsibilities of patients. Lessons learned from these legal cases can facilitate an understanding of how patients are expected to participate actively, along with healthcare practitioners, in a shared responsibility to promote beneficial outcomes from pharmaceutical products and services.

Upon successful completion of this course, learners should be able to:
1. Describe the concept of “rights” and “responsibilities” of patients who receive products and services from pharmacists.
2. Evaluate the claim that a patient has failed to meet the patient’s responsibility as the beneficiary of pharmaceutical products and services provided by a pharmacist.
3. Formulate a policy for pharmacy practice that recognizes and incorporates the shared responsibilities of pharmaceutical care providers and of the patients whose interests they serve.
