A few weeks ago, I was fortunate to be among movers and shakers in pharmacy who have historically met in Bob Osterhaus’s screened-in porch. The goal of “Bob O’s Porch” is to discuss novel ways to keep pharmacy innovative and at the forefront of healthcare trends.
If you know Bob, you know he is the definition of a “mover and shaker.” He is a former community pharmacy owner with decades of experience serving as President of the American Pharmacists Association, the Iowa Pharmacy Association, the ACPE Board of Directors, and in the state legislature for 10 years.
This particular conversation was focused on Pharmacy’s Standard of Care. Many states are moving to this regulation – where pharmacists can deliver patient care within the realm of their clinical training, rather than having prescriptive rules. As an example, each state currently has requirements for administering immunizations (e.g. 20- hour ACPE-accredited CE course). With the Standard of Care, if it’s in your practice scope, you can administer immunizations and you would be held professionally responsible for determining the education that helps you feel confident in providing that care. This is in line with medicine and nursing, and states such as Idaho have already successfully made this transition.
It was a thought-filled discussion and reiterated the value of continuing education, keeping up with market trends, and staying in the know. It reminded me of my favorite quote:
Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed, citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.
-Margaret Mead
And, even closer to home:
If it’s good for patients, it’s good for pharmacy.
-Bob Osterhaus
Let’s keep pushing forward, friends – for our patients and for pharmacy!
As always, have a great week and keep learning!
