Summer is here, new pharmacists are joining our profession, and it’s a great time to reflect on the beginning of your professional career. What was your first job and how has your career unfolded throughout the years? Maybe it was just a few years ago, or (like me) you need to reach far back to find the memory!
In June, nearly 30 years ago, I took the NAPLEX and MPJE, then joined 2 friends on a 30-day excursion to 10 countries in Europe before my “real world” began. I’ll never forget the day I called my parents to learn I had passed the boards (back in the day it came in through snail mail only!). It was a glorious feeling to know I was free to begin my professional career journey, and I couldn’t wait to get started!
Looking back, I realize I had partially designed where I wanted my career to go, but that many unforeseen – yet intentional – turns have led me to where I am today. I also discovered that education has always been a key ingredient to my success. Each time I changed direction, I had to learn new tools to adapt. I hope education – not only continuing education – is part of your success too!

ACPE Meeting in Chicago Last Week
Kathy Schott, CEimpact’s Continuing Education Administrator (CEA), serves on the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education’s CPE Commission. She attended the bi-yearly meeting last week in Chicago, IL (pictured below with PJ Hughes – Professor and Assistant Provost at Samford University McWhorter School of Pharmacy, Ruby Singh – Senior Vice President, Education & Publications at AMCP and Ginger Scott – Professor and Director of Continuing Education, at West Virginia University School of Pharmacy.
