As I was researching American Pharmacists Month, I came across a special day I didn’t know about – National Check Your Meds Day.
This is listed in several online calendars – and coincides with Loud Shirt Day, Celebration of the Mind Day, and National Apple Day. 🤔
This caught my attention, so I dug in further.
Here’s the description of this “national” holiday:
National Check Your Meds Day prompts consumers to bring their prescriptions to their local pharmacists for review.
IMO, this happens every day of the year. Why do we need a day to celebrate it?
Maybe because “consumers” still don’t think about pharmacy in that way. In patients’ eyes, pharmacies are a place to get their medication “product” and nothing more.
So, I’d like to issue a challenge.
For the remainder of American Pharmacists Month, talk to at least one person each day about what pharmacists do.
The goal is to spread awareness, so this doesn’t necessarily need to happen in the pharmacy.
It can be as simple as:
- “Did you know you can ask your pharmacist questions about your medications?”
- “Are you up to date on your vaccines? Did you know you can get those at your pharmacy?”
- “The next time you’re in the over-the-counter aisle looking for a medication, ask your pharmacist what they recommend. You’re likely spending too much money on brand combination products that you don’t need!”
