The Farmer and the Horse

During our leadership team meeting this week, we learned that a proposal we submitted to a pharmacy group to co-develop education was not approved. Although we were disappointed, we reminded each other about the story of the farmer and his horse. There are various versions, but essentially it goes like this:

Once upon a time there was a farmer whose horse ran away. That evening, all of his neighbors came around to commiserate. They said, “We are sorry to hear your horse ran away. This is most unfortunate.”

The farmer said, “Maybe.”

The next day, the horse came back and brought seven wild horses with it. In the evening everybody came back and said, “Oh, isn’t that lucky. What a great turn of events. You now have eight horses!”

The farmer again said, “Maybe.”

The following day his son tried to break one of the horses, and while riding it, he was thrown and broke his leg. The neighbors then said, “Oh dear, that’s too bad.”

The farmer responded, “Maybe.”

The next day the government officers came around to enroll people into the army, and they rejected his son because he had a broken leg. Again, all the neighbors came around and said, “Isn’t that great!”

Again, he said, “Maybe.”

Often, we label our experience as “bad” if we don’t like the outcome; or “good” if we like it. But whatever happens at that moment, we don’t know the consequences it may bring in the future.

This is a great reminder that whatever happens, just happens.

And, the way we let it affect us is the true measure of the outcome.

So, keep doing what you do, remember why you do it, and whatever happens, it might be unfortunate or fortunate. Only time will tell.

As always, thanks for tuning into Jen’s Desk. I appreciate you being on this educational journey alongside us.

Have a great week and keep learning!
