Learn more about Dr. Kristin Meyer in our May Faculty Spotlight!
Dr. Kristin Meyer is an associate professor at Drake University College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences. She’s worked there for almost 20 years and specializes in geriatric pharmacy and long-term care. Dr. Meyer also serves as a pharmacist consultant at LTC Pharmacy in Ankeny, Iowa where she works on clinical projects, research, and drug information.
It was a preceptor that opened her eyes to geriatric pharmacy. Dr. Meyer still appreciates learning about the different pathways of the profession while in pharmacy school.
“It only makes sense. I was raised in a multi-generation household. I spent a lot of time in a nursing home when my great-grandma had to move there from our house when I was young.”
Dr. Meyer very much has a heart for improving the health of older adults.
“I am very passionate about healthcare for older adults. I think it is an area of practice where student pharmacists and other health care professionals aren’t exposed to often enough. It doesn’t seem as exciting as critical care or emergency medicine, but it is super important and often can be complex. I enjoy helping students find their passion and it excites me when that passion is for older adults.”
More than 67% of older adults take 5 or more medications. Do you know how to support the patients in identifying when a deprescribing plan is needed? Besides costing billions each year, non-optimized medication use puts patients at risk. That’s why – it’s time to deprescribe!
Take our May CE Course: It’s Time to Deprescribe with Dr. Kristin Meyer. This crash course will help you support medication optimization and safety in the pharmacy.
