In 2021, I started the year with a word that I wanted to live by – Intention.
This word came from reflecting on the past year and realizing my “resolutions” were short-lived and not deeply meaningful.
Instead, ‘Intention’ was something I could post in places to remind me of the habits and growth I wanted to focus on that year.
This year’s word is measure.
It came to me as I reflected on the loss of my friend and mentor Tom Temple last year.
One of his favorite quotes was:
“Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away.” –Maya Angelou
I also want to make decisions based on data and the memories or output this information creates (i.e. a 30-minute workout over a 30-minute show binge!).
Some of our team’s words are: Consistency, Advance, Strength, Energy, Flourish, Thrive, Cultivate, & Balance.
If you do a word of the year, I’d love to hear what it is and why. And if you don’t, maybe consider it. It too might become a habit.

Continuing Education is:
- Something every professional always need (to keep our license and certifications)
- Something we, as individuals, typically don’t want to pay for, but must
- A way to keep up to date on what’s happening in our profession and the healthcare industry
- A way to mitigate burnout – if we develop expertise and find more meaning in what we do, we optimize performance & goals achieved
- Beneficial to employers and professional organizations because you create happier professionals
