An Introduction to Pharmacogenomics for Pharmacists
An Introduction to Pharmacogenomics for Pharmacists
Many factors can influence how we respond to a medication including age, lifestyle, and our genetic makeup. Oftentimes, patients may suffer for months and years before an effective treatment plan is realized. Pharmacogenomics can guide treatment so therapy can be personalized to improve patient care more quickly and effectively. This course is a gateway for pharmacists who wish to expand their practice to include pharmacogenomic testing and analysis to improve care for their patients.
Upon successful completion of this knowledge-based CPE course, pharmacists should be able to:
1. Review essential vocabulary terms related to pharmacogenomics
2. Discuss ways pharmacogenomics (PGx) and pharmacokinetics (PK) can improve prescribing and patient outcomes
3. Describe at least two resources for clinical PGx/PK information available to pharmacies
4. Review drugs and disease states for which PGx may impact efficacy and safety
5. Discuss case studies that demonstrate how PGx individualizes a patient’s drug therapy
6. Discuss strategies to engage other members of the care team in applying PGx to patient care
