Federal Laws to Protect Patients
Federal Laws to Protect Patients
While many federal laws relate to the drug product, there are also laws that protect patients such as OBRA-90, Poison Prevention and Tamper-Resistant Packaging, HIPAA, 340B, and the PREP Act. This course reviews these laws and the pharmacy technician’s role in complying with them in practice.
Upon successful completion of this knowledge-based CPE course, pharmacy technicians should be able to:
1. Explain the significance of federal laws that regulate the practice of pharmacy, as opposed to regulating the pharmaceutical product.
2. Develop effective strategies to support the pharmacy practice team in compliance with federal laws related to pharmacy.
3. Implement procedures to assist pharmacists and other pharmacy personnel in the provision of pharmaceutical services that meet the requirements of OBRA-90, HIPAA, the Poison Prevention Packaging Act, and other federal laws that affect pharmacy practice.
