Fifty Shades of [Grey Areas]: Case Studies in Pharmacy Law and Ethics [Pharmacist]
This course blends theory with real-life case studies to explore recommended practices for product labeling, the complexities of maintaining patient confidentiality, and the legal obligations of pharmacy professionals to persons not established as pharmacy patients. Additionally, learners will gain an understanding of the pharmacist’s right to freedom of speech in consultations and examine the legal nuances surrounding parental consent for the immunization of minor patients. By utilizing engaging practical scenarios, this course provides invaluable insights into the legal and ethical “grey areas” shaping modern pharmacy practice.
Upon successful completion of this knowledge-based CPE course, pharmacists should be able to:
1. Describe appropriate labeling and placement practices for pharmaceutical products.
2. Recognize the challenges for patient confidentiality that are presented by large electronic datasets.
3. Discuss the pharmacist’s legal duty to persons who are not established pharmacy patients.
4. Explain the basis of a pharmacist’s right to freedom of speech in consultations with patients and healthcare professionals.
5. Review the legal responsibility for parental consent for immunization of a minor patient.
