Guardians of Privacy: Pharmacy Technicians and Patient Confidentiality [Pharmacist]

Guardians of Privacy: Pharmacy Technicians and Patient Confidentiality [Pharmacist]

Patient confidentiality is one of the most significant responsibilities of all members of the pharmacy team. HIPAA violations by any member of the team may expose the pharmacy and the pharmacist-in-charge to regulatory consequences. This course discusses the legal and ethical principles of patient confidentiality, with a focus on the pharmacy technician’s role in maintaining the privacy of patient information.

Upon successful completion of this knowledge-based CPE course, pharmacists should be able to:
1. Outline the basic principles of patient confidentiality.
2. Discuss possible communication alternatives to meet patient needs without violating patient confidentiality.
3. Describe a pharmacy program designed to protect patient confidentiality.
