Infection Control Standards for Healthcare Professionals 2024

Infection Control Standards for Healthcare Professionals 2024

According to the CDC at least 23,000 people die each year because of infections. It is imperative that health care workers and any individual involved in the care of a person have a better understanding of how infection is spread. Equally important is the ability to know how to stop the spread of infection. This course will provide the learner with an in-depth discussion on infection control, best practices, and infection prevention.

This course contains materials related to the COVID-19 Pandemic. Because the literature and recommendations for COVID-19 continue to change rapidly, the COVID-19 material will remain as a supplemental handout until 2022 or 2023.

Upon successful completion of this course, learners should be able to:
1. Recognize factors that place an individual at risk for infection
2. Describe how infections spread (chain of infection) and identify at least three ways to break the chain of infection
3. Explain the proper method for washing hands and describe the appropriate situations when alcohol-based hand rub can be used
4. Identify the different types of personal protective equipment (PPE) and discuss the appropriate situations in which PPE’s are necessary
5. Demonstrate the proper steps to take when exposed to potentially infectious material
