Is It a True Drug Allergy?
Is It a True Drug Allergy?
Nearly 90% of people who say they have a penicillin allergy, don’t have a true allergy. And it often leads to a prescription for a more expensive and less effective medication. In this course, you’ll learn a guideline-based approach to evaluating and discussing hypersensitivity in patients with documented allergies, opening up their drug therapy options.
Upon successful completion of this application-based CPE course, pharmacists should be able to:
1. Review the pathophysiology and clinical presentation of drug hypersensitivity reactions
2. Recognize different methods of evaluating drug hypersensitivity reactions
3. Develop a guideline-based management plan for a patient with history of antibiotic allergy
4. Summarize the guideline-based approach to patients with NSAID, chemotherapy, and biologic agent allergies
