PrEParing for Tomorrow: A Pharmacist’s Guide to HIV Prevention
This course addresses the ongoing challenges of HIV in the United States and promotes a pre-exposure service in the pharmacy as a vital tool for HIV prevention and an overall contribution to public health. Specifically, our faculty expert will review current statistics related to HIV prevention, reveal disparities in HIV incidence and access to prevention, and highlight critical information for pharmacists to know about PrEP therapy. Learners will be equipped with the skills to identify high-risk individuals, compare FDA-approved regimens, counsel on side effects, establish monitoring parameters, and recommend appropriate PrEP therapy and HIV prevention methods for patients.
Upon successful completion of this application-based CPE course, pharmacists should be able to:
1. Differentiate between pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) and other HIV prevention methods
2. Identify populations that can benefit from PrEP, including key risk factors
3. Compare and contrast the FDA-approved regimens for PrEP
4. Discuss key counseling and monitoring parameters for those on PrEP
5. Based on a patient case, recommend PrEP therapy for a patient
