Statin-Related Side Effects: No Pain, No Gain…Nocebo?
Statin-Related Side Effects: No Pain, No Gain…Nocebo?
This month we are dissecting an article from the Journal of the American College of Cardiology – Side Effect Patterns in a Crossover Trial of Statin, Placebo, and No Treatment.
The “nocebo effect” describes the negative outcome of a medication due to a belief that it will cause harm. This month’s Journal Club will discuss the SAMSON trial which evaluated the nocebo effect and its implications for approaching statin intolerance in patients.
Upon successful completion of this application-based course, participants should be able to:
1. Apply strategies to mitigate statin-related myalgias.
2. Define the ³nocebo effect” and identify clinical examples of this phenomenon.
3. Explain key findings from the SAMSON trial.
4. Discuss the strengths and limitations of the reviewed trial.
5. Discuss clinical implications of the trial and apply to a patient case.
