Description
In response to the rising prevalence of obesity and its associated health risks, this course empowers pharmacists to become key allies in patients’ weight management journeys. Through a comprehensive curriculum, learners will gain insights into evidence-based strategies for weight reduction, including pharmacologic treatments and lifestyle modifications. Pharmacists will learn to effectively guide patients through challenges, build sustainable habits, facilitate behavior change, and achieve long-term success in weight management utilizing essential health coaching techniques. At the conclusion of the course, pharmacists will engage in interactive case studies and practical exercises aimed at equipping them with the tools and confidence needed to make a positive impact on their patients’ overall health and well-being.
Upon successful completion of this application-based CPE course, pharmacists should be able to:
1. Discuss the general principles of metabolism and energy balance and their roles in weight management.
2. Recognize common contributors to obesity and the health benefits of weight loss.
3. Review currently available FDA-approved anti-obesity medications (AOMs).
4. Discuss frequently asked questions about AOMs.
5. Identify the key macronutrients and their roles in weight regulation.
6. Explain the role of hydration in weight management and how proper fluid intake can support weight loss goals.
7. Outline the principles of portion control and mindful eating practices in achieving and maintaining a healthy weight.
8. Discuss how sodium levels impact water retention and overall weight regulation.
9. List key health coaching tips a pharmacist can provide about macronutrient, water, calorie, and sodium intake for weight loss.
10. Recognize important pearls to share with patients about how food labels can facilitate informed dietary choices.
11. Discuss strategies to address barriers to adherence to nutritional goals.
12. List tools that patients can use to track food intake.
13. Describe the relationship between nutrition and mental health.
14. Identify common myths about nutrition and weight loss to promote informed decision-making in dietary choices.
15. Describe the role exercise in weight management, highlighting its impact on metabolism and energy balance.
16. Discuss practical strategies for integrating exercise into a comprehensive weight management plan.
17. Identify common myths about exercise and weight loss to promote informed decision-making in choosing a fitness approach.
18. Explain the influence of hormones and sleep patterns on weight management.
